  1. This comment is amazing, thank you! 🥰

I really love the really lush sensory descriptions of the rooftop garden – it’s so immersive and tranquil. And Gaignun and Jr’s brotherly bond is lovely; not just the telepathic (?) connection, but their concern for each other and the teasing bagel banter :) I've always loved Gaignun and Jr.'s relationship and it's always a treat to write them together. The rooftop garden is one of my favorite original locations; I really need to write about more. And you are correct about them being telepaths. 😁

And it’s heartbreaking that Gaignun's carapace of ‘coping’ is so thin that just such a simple figure of speech can send him spiralling into flashbacks. He can usually hold it together, but this is one of those days where everything gets under his skin.

The disjointed memories came out of nowhere. I'd originally planned to have a straight Point A to Point B narrative, and then the line about dissolving and overriding memories appeared out of nowhere and I was like, "👀 Well hello there Non-Linear Storytelling, how nice of you to introduce yourself," and I just went with it. I'm so glad it worked out.

And, no wonder, the poor, poor guy - he sounds like he was so young, to be exposed to, and forced to perpetrate, this kind of violence. And having to shoot people who’d been on his own side, because they’d been infected by U-DO - that's wildly horrible! In the games, when we see bits and pieces of this night, it's always through the lens of Jr.'s trauma, but it had to be just as horrific for Gaignun as well. So I felt it was time to show things through his perspective. And they were young. Just twelve. 😔

But it's so well written, how that argument still seems to ring a bit hollow to Gaignun. I'm delighted that hollowness came through! I thought of reworking those lines, but I'm glad I left them as is.

And that last line is incredible, so heartbreaking! The fest prompt made this line appear in my head, and I built the whole fic around it. 😁 (But also 🥺)

    Thank you again! 💛
