Chapter Text
Edgeworth enters his office, case file in hand, closing the door behind him, oblivious to anything happening in the room itself. He looks up and sees Kay Faraday spinning in his office chair.
Noticeably taken aback by this, he asks the most obvious question, “Kay! How did you get into my office? The door was locked! I- How long have you been here?” He continues towards his desk and begins to usher her out of the seat.
“Mr. Edgeworth! I’ve only been here for about an hour. Thought you’d have been here sooner.” Kay replies, flopping onto the couch in Edgeworth’s office, “What took you so long anyhow?”
“Transferal of a case to me, the original prosecutor had a medical emergency and has a required week of bedrest, and I decided to take the case.” He replied calmly, appearing to backseat his confusion as to her intrusion to focus on the case.
“What kind of case is it?” Kay replied, moving her hands behind her head and leaning back against the arm rest, wondering why he decided to take the case but deciding not to ask.
“Homicide. Seems that the victim was murdered at Sunset Station not too long ago. The first day of the trial has finished, but no verdict was reached.”
“You seem like you could use the help of a great thief to solve this investigation!” Kay stood up from the sofa and struck as heroic a pose as she could muster, waiting for a response from Edgeworth.
“I suppose that I can’t say no to this?” Edgeworth replies, grabbing his organizer and the current case notes standing up from his desk.
“Nope! I’m coming with because I know that I will be useful and know you won’t say no!” She says confidently, and after hearing a sigh from Edgeworth she knows she’s right.
Kay glances around the crime scene, surprised by the much smaller than usual amount of police at this crime scene compared to the others she’d been to recently. “Why are there fewer officers at the scene?” she asks, looking up at Edgeworth as they walk past the police tape.
“It’s the second day of investigation, all the preliminary requirements have been filled out so it’s more of a second comb over to find the finer details, but we will do what we can and go off what the previous prosecutor had as well. I suppose we should speak to the officers here and see what might not be written down.” She watches as he skims the case file, before writing information into his organizer. He begins to walk, only to stop after a few steps.
“Everything alright Mr. Edgeworth?” Kay asked, looking over where Edgeworth’s glance was locked, finding a man in a blue suit, gawdy spiked hair, and something shiny on his lapel, walking towards them accompanied by a girl in what appear to be spirit medium robes, with a beaded necklace on as well.
Kay saw Edgeworth begin to open his mouth only for the man in the blue suit to say something first, “Edgeworth! I had no idea you were back in the country! Wait. Wasn’t there another Prosecutor on this case before you?”
Edgeworth responded calmly, “Ah, Wright, Ms. Fey. There was yes, but they had a medical emergency, and I took the case in their place…”
As the two men continued to talk to each other exchanging notes and looking at evidence, the spirit medium waved at Kay and spoke to her in slightly hushed tones, “Those two can drabble on for hours. It’s like they’re in their own world.”
“Very Reminiscent of Mr. Edgeworth’s conversations with Agent Lang. I guess I should introduce myself. I’m Kay Faraday! Great Thief Yatagarasu! And… Mr. Edgeworth’s assistant of sorts.” Kay replies, happy to communicate with a friend of a friend of Edgeworth’s.
“I’m Maya Fey! If you couldn’t tell from the robes, I channel spirits, and I’m helping Nick while I’m in town. How do you know Mr. Edgeworth? Also why is he working with a thief?” The girl replied, eyes wide with interest about who Kay is.
“I’ve been his investigative assistant for about a month or so! I’m a thief on sabbatical, and haven’t stolen anything yet, which I think Mr. Edgeworth is happy about. Well, I met him 7 years ago but got to know him personally more recently. So much has happened over the past month. So, the guy in blue talking to Mr. Edgeworth is… Nick? Is that what you said?” Kay looked at the two of them, still locked in a conversation, somehow still talking about the case.
“Yep! I call him Nick, but his name’s Phoenix Wright, he’s an attorney and has been for about 3 years now. Surely Mr. Edgeworth has talked about him, right?” Maya asks, also watching the two lawyers talk.
“Not by name no, I don’t have much information about him as far as I know.”
Edgeworth paused the conversation for a moment, and then spoke, changing the topic away from the investigation, “Oh right, I suppose that since she’s here I should introduce you to each other. Wright, this is Kay Faraday, she’s my… assistant. And Kay this is Phoenix Wright; he is an Attorney, and someone that I have a lot of admiration for. He helped me become the man I am today.” Kay could spot the beginnings of what appears to be blush on Mr. Wright’s face from that introduction.
“Wonderful to meet you Ms. Faraday.” Mr. Wright says with a smile, reaching towards her to shake her hand.
“Good to meet you, Mr. Wright! I’ll take a guess that the badge on your lapel is an attorney’s badge?” Kay replied cheerfully and shook his outstretched hand. She then studied the man, trying to shake this feeling that she knows something about him, remembering conversations with Edgeworth while on cases, thinking of who he reminds her of. Glancing over at Edgeworth, she tries to remember conversations with him where he is as timid as he is now, and a few specific things come together, and it all clicks together like puzzle pieces.
Mr. Wright begins to speak again, only to be abruptly cut off by the result of Kay’s logical connections, “OH!” Visibly startling Edgeworth and the other, to a certain extent.
“Kay? What was the ‘Oh’ for?” Mr. Edgeworth replied, confused and slightly worried, which Kay could only tell from the additional lines on his forehead as he looked over to her.
Kay began to point at Mr. Wright and was on the verge of jumping up and down, “He’s! He’s!”
“Mr. Wright? He’s what?”
“He’s ‘That man!’ isn’t he!” The moment she said that Edgeworth fell completely silent, mortified by what she had just said, only able to muster a squeak as kay turns to Maya and begins speaking once again, “I do know about Mr. Wright! Edgeworth talks about him all the time!”
Maya and Mr. Wright both look at Kay as she speaks before replying in unison, “Really?”
Kay continues, completely missing the rising blush on Edgeworth’s face, “Oh yeah. Can’t go a whole day without at least mentioning ‘that man’ or ‘the one who saved me’ or ‘a certain friend.’ I think he called you ‘a certain serial bluffer’ at least once.” Phoenix’s face dropped at the phrase ‘serial bluffer’ and looked over at Edgeworth. “Oh!! He also has said that a shade of blue very similar to your suit there Mr. Wright was a ‘calming color!’”
Edgeworth finally says something, and Kay notices that he is almost the same color as his blazer, “That’s quite enough Kay. We have an investigation to start…” And he sets off to look over the crime scene, not waiting for Kay to follow. She quickly follows suit, nonetheless, making note of Mr. Wright’s and Maya’s completely dumbfounded looks.
