This is a parallel universe of the first work of this series, and continuation of the second work of this series.
Reading the first one might help you understand better, but not necessary. The second one, however, must be read before this.Sherlock and Mycroft's relationship xhanged after they decided to work together to deal with Magnussen. However, that made Eurus to get jealous and set up the problems way earlier for Sherlock. Holmeses and guests were at Holmes manor for Christmas when Eurus forced Sherlock to play the game with threats of bombs.
Essentially, this is the final problem fix-it, but during the Christmas in S03 E03.

It is not a Holmescest (I didn’t add the tag for a reason, there's no incest even if you squint). There's no touching or anything, but the fake/pretend relationship tag is between Sherlock and Mycroft. There's few endearments thrown out and they are being nicer to each other, but nothing more. If you are uncomfortable with that, you might want to pass this one.
Sherlock needed to provoke the suspect by pretending homosexual relationship, and it had to be Mycroft.
John and Greg were fascinated and slightly intimated at seeing Mycroft flirting, but well, the case is solved, so all is good.Series

Mycroft sighed. He knows he's on the verge of falling apart. He hoped he didn't have to take this step, but it seems like he needs to. He sighed once more, and closed his eyes.
Mycroft was breaking down with all the guilt and his parents' reproach after the final problem. He needed to delete all the emotional attachment to survive.It could be depressing and I don't think it's a happy ending even though it's not necessarily a sad ending. You are warned.
