Summary
It was the worst kept secret in King’s Landing, but no one cared. Not really. They’d even made a joke of it, the four of them, calling Jace and Luc, Lord Strong, amongst themselves. Ser Laenor seemed content enough to share his place in his sons’ hearts with another man, and might even surrender it entirely, if he was ever asked.
Aegon could see the way Ser Hawin’s shoulders grew stiff beneath his armor.
To speak it aloud, to insinuate the way Ser Criston threatened to, was an attack not only on Ser Harwin, but the princes and their mother too. Aegon turned to Jacaerys and Luc.
“Or a son,” said Criston.
“Stop him,” Aegon commanded at the same time.
--
Aegon wants no part in House Hightower's ambitions. What he really wants he's only ever seen in stolen moments between a sworn shield and his sister's sons. So, he makes a choice, and maybe stops a war in the process.

Summary
Otto Hightower’s face darkened. “Continue on your way, Ser Qarl,” he said. Shouldering his cloak back to free his arms, Otto took a heavy step in Aegon’s direction and reached out.
“I’m afraid I can’t do that, my lord.”
Aegon hadn’t realized he’d shut his eyes until a calloused but gentle hand wrapped itself around his wrist and drew them back open. Ser Qarl stepped bodily between prince and lord and levied a look at Otto that made the old man fall completely still. Aegon wished desperately that he could see it.
“Prince Aegon has graciously offered to help me collect Ser Laenor,” said the knight. “Isn’t that right, my prince?”
Aegon nodded wordlessly until he realized that Ser Qarl could not see, then he cleared his throat and said as evenly as he could manage, “yes.”
--
The passing of Laena Velaryon leads to the bleakest of family reunions. While Aegon would like nothing more than to pass the time being as unintrusive as possible to his cousins' grief, he cannot escape the reach of his grandfather's displeasure. Luckily for him, Ser Qarl has become quite comfortable inserting himself in the business of high lords.

Summary
You’d better have a damn good reason for waking me up,” said Aegon. His second hand fell across his face and his fingers dug at the sleep still clinging to the corners of his eyes. He could already tell that the roiling in his head from the day’s drinking would not fade, so he forced himself up to his elbows. His hand dropped from his face and he squinted at the small crowd assembling around his bed. “Jace?” he asked, ignoring the way the tangled curls of his hair clung to the side of his face and mouth in a way that was probably about as dignified as it felt.
Jace stared at him from where he sat crouched at the foot of Aegon’s bed. His face was drawn and he looked nervous, which had Aegon blinking and sitting up a little straighter. Aegon swept the room and found Baela and Rhaena standing huddled together just off Jace's shoulder. “What’s happened?” he asked.
Jacaerys bit his lip and glanced over to Baela, who did nothing but frown at the boy and then turned away to whisper to her sister. Getting no answer from the twins, Jace turned back, his expression grim. “Someone stole Vhagar,” he said.

Summary
“Never fear, brother,” he said. “I’ll not let you be skewered by some high flung mummer.”
“I’d hardly call the Faceless Men ‘high flung mummers’,” said Aegon.
Aemond rolled his eyes and snorted. “Think of it this way, they’re probably not even after you.”
“Mother seems to think so,” said Aegon.
“Our mother,” said Aemond. “Is in the unique position of both fearing for your well-being and also hoping it is in danger if only to have her ambitions vindicated,” he said. “Hers is not an unbiased opinion.”
--
Just because Aegon has no designs on the Iron Throne doesn't mean that the wider world is aware of that same fact. When a potential plot to assassinate the Heir to the Iron Throne is uncovered, there is question as to whether the true target is the king's daughter, or his son. To mitigate both threats, Aegon and Rhaenyra are sequestered away for their own protection to wait out the long, tense night.
