She opened the bedroom door quickly, walking in with a brisk stride that indicated the little vacation was over. Miss was no longer an unattached maiden. She had claimed a man who was dirtying the kitchen. She had demanded her chances to meet bachelors and put them through the laps of a thoroughbred man. She had set out to free herself of childhood, so childhood bellyaching must be taken from her.
“Good morning, Miss Penelope,” she said. “I am sure you are well enough today, and if not we must get you moving about or you will have your whole system congested. I know you did not eat, but you will try again for breakfast. There is something special. It is rather on theme for you. Eggs in Purgatory, from the Italians. We will not be holding up every bit of business for your feelings. There is a wedding mostly brought off.”
The lady in her bed did not move. Her red hair was braided neatly, but she gave the prospect of a drowned lass with no care to be pried from the beach and rinsed off.
“There will not be a wedding, Mrs. Varley,” she said hoarsely. “I am sorry.”
