This was written in the mid-2000s and it shows. The work is worth studying to see the immense gulf in implicit assumptions between then and now
By that I mean, the author was an orthodox feminist of 2006, but Overton has shifted quite a bit since 2006. Specifically, Harry’s first scene with River would have had him flayed by the metoo crowd.
Overall, the story was best in it’s establishing chapters and dropped in quality as time went on

Simon never really thought about what it would feel like to be shot before Jubal Early did precisely that. It hurt, of course, though not quite as bad as he expected. But there’s more to being shot than just physical pain and Simon isn’t sure what to do with the emotional fallout from the whole event.
