The Tarnished decides to hire Gostoc to be his exclusive Gatekeeper after he has conquered everything and become a rather reclusive Elden Lord devoid of all previous ties to Knights and Maidens of old. There is no particular reason why the Tarnished chose Gostoc of all people except, perhaps, that there is something abnormally charming and humbling in the way the irascible old man speaks when he is truly incensed to anger. The Tarnished likes that twisted honesty about him, as well as, the manner in which he stomps out his aggression or degrades someone like him...while making him feel so comfortable kneeling beneath the height of his throne to service one perceived as utterly beneath him.
