Summary
The truth of the matter is, Kaveh has no idea how to read Alhaitham. He prides himself on being an expert at understanding people, his empathetic heart lending him the capacity to relate deeply with those around him (oftentimes to his detriment). But with Alhaitham, there is nothing for him to read; no clues from his cool expression for him to grasp. The man appears stoic all the time even during their petty bickering.
Honestly, when was the last time Kaveh has seen the man do anything except smirk or frown? Does Alhaitham feel happiness? Has he ever seen the man laugh?
Kaveh's mind is drawing a blank on the latter and it...bothers him deeply.

His head gently bobbed up and down, grasping something in his mind before using charcoal to burn it to the paper in front of him. When he paused in his work, his graceful fingers moved like water, twirling a thin pencil around the fine floss of his thoughts.
Kaveh knew he needed to stop when he started being able to draw Alhaitham from angles he hadn’t studied.
Kaveh knew he couldn’t stop when he was able to draw Alhaitham entirely from memory.

Summary
Kaveh looked towards the bathroom door. A soft and gentle call out, reminding him he wasn't alone. Alhaitham must have noticed he was still in there. Slowly the lion came out, shaking his head softly. Alhaitham was quick to pull him into a hug. His hands gripped at the snow leopard's shirt. When he was being held by his mate, things felt okay. The world felt less crushing with Alhaitham’s strong arms looped around him.
He rocked side to side gently, doing anything he could to comfort his mate. The snow leopard’s tail draped loosely around the lion’s thigh. He could smell the anxiety and disappointment in his pheromones. In all honesty, it broke Alhaitham’s heart that he couldn't take Kaveh’s pain away. The primal need to make sure his lion felt loved was all he could think about.
Despite Alhaitham's sweet words, a heaviness weighed on Kaveh’s heart. He wanted to give his mate a cub. He wanted them to have a family together. A feeling of guilt blossomed in the deepest part of his brain. The part that said he wasn't good enough. The part that consumed him for a large portion of his life.

"Always." Alhaitham replied, without giving it a second thought.
"Archons, Alhaitham. Does he know you're dating him?"
Alhaitham snorted, a flush dashing across his high cheekbones. "What do you think?"
Tighnari leveled a piercing stare at Alhaitham in return. "I think you both must've fallen out of the Stupid Tree and hit every branch on the way down." He shook his head. "Come on, Alhaitham! At some point, one of you is going to have to say something!"Alhaitham figures out his sexuality at fourteen years old. It takes Kaveh nearly twice as long. That doesn't stop Kaveh from making out with Alhaitham all over Sumeru in the interim.

Summary
Alhaitham and Kaveh are always together; that is a known fact in Sumeru. You could never pry those two apart, no matter how much they may say they want it. However, the people in Sumeru have begun to notice a rather… domestic… shift in their interactions. The citizens of Sumeru see it, the students at the Akademiya see it, and even some of their closest companions have noticed the change in behavior around their ill-tempered and levelheaded friends. The truth is, Alhaitham and Kaveh are in a relationship with each other. It is not a typical relationship, they argue, bicker, and fight -- but they love each other, nonetheless. While Kaveh tries to hide this fact, he does a poor job. Over time, the citizens of Sumeru start to realize something; their petty scholarly rivalry, that has been growing since their Akademiya days, is much more than that. As more and more people begin to put the pieces together, the question stands; How many people will figure it out before the two can say it on their own?

"I’m trying to learn Liyuean and this book is supposed to be helping me,” Kaveh responds shortly, barely even sparing a glance for the man who was now right beside him.
Alhaitham’s brows furrowed, “And why exactly are you learning Liyuean?”
“I’ve got a commission from the Tianquan in Liyue to build a public library and I’m meant to be staying there for a week or so soon and very few people speak Sumerian there."
“I could go with you.”
“You- what?”
“I could go with you. To Liyue,” Alhaitham repeated calmly.

"You... you defended my design."
"I defended sound architectural principles and basic economics. Your design happened to embody both." Alhaitham turned a page. "Don't read too much into it."
But Kaveh was reading into it. He was reading into the way Alhaitham had memorized every detail of his sketches, the way he'd known exactly which arguments would resonate with Darzi, the way he'd stepped in without being asked.
"You've been studying my work," Kaveh said quietly.
Alhaitham's fingers paused on the page for just a fraction of a second. "I live here. It's unavoidable."
"That's not an answer."
Finally, Alhaitham looked up, and there was something in his expression that Kaveh couldn't quite name—something softer than his usual analytical detachment.
"You're talented, Kaveh," Alhaitham said simply. "Frustratingly impractical, financially irresponsible, and prone to self-sabotage, but talented. It would be a waste to let someone like Darzi diminish that because you're too proud to speak his language."
