Summary
When given an assignment at school, Neal Burke does what he thinks is the obvious thing. Neal Caffrey does not see it coming.
Neal tilted it to different angles, studying it like a foreign object. “What is this?”
“It’s a trusted adult sticker.”
“What… is a trusted adult sticker?” The title was pretty self-explanatory, but Neal was still trying to wrap his mind around it.
Neal looked at him funny. “Uh, it means you’re an adult and I trust you.”

Summary
Mozzie shows up at Neal's apartment after 4x16 to apologize.
"I’m never going to understand what it’s like to resent your family. To be glad they’re not around, or to want to keep them out of your life, on the other side of some impenetrable wall. But I know that was your reality, and I couldn’t imagine it possibly being right, so I pushed you to give him a chance, because you were living my fantasy and just turning it away and… I’m sorry. Because you were right."

Summary
"It was my mom and Ellen and I, and they changed my name to Danny Brooks. My mom told me my dad died a hero, and... I grew up envying this man that I never even knew. I wanted to follow in his footsteps. In a way, I guess I did."
"No, you didn't. You're not a killer."
"Only because you were there to stop me."
Recent events have dug up Neal's old fears that he might have gotten his childhood wish to turn out like his father. He still hasn't forgottten the day he pointed a gun at Fowler, a gun he stole with the intention of killing Fowler, and came mere moments from pulling the trigger.

Summary
After Rebecca is arrested, Neal is exhausted. He's had to keep more secrets from Peter in the last month than he's wanted to in a long time, and it's taking its toll. Peter knows he's being lied to and doesn't trust him, and Neal feels the only way to stay in Peter's good graces is to keep lying, and the downward spiral has been slowly destroying them both.
Neal decides to end the spiral, and if it lands him behind bars, so be it.
He just wants to be completely honest, if only to prove that he can.

(Or, after 5x11, Neal comes completely clean about everything that happened in season five, the good and the bad that Peter never fully learned, and both of them are better for it.)

Even as he catches the knife and saves the girl, Neal feels sick to his stomach. Because Luc Renaud, from what he understands of him, will not take Keller’s failure well.
He knows now: he’s lucky to have such a forgiving and non-violent handler as Peter.“You want me to be happy,” Neal finishes for him, tasting the words like they’re strange. Because—because they are. They make no sense, not strategically, mathematically, formulaically—
“Yes,” Keller agrees, nonetheless.

“It was Collins. I tried to run early on, ’n he clipped me in the leg.”
“Clipped you?” Peter mutters skeptically. “Neal, the way you’re limping, the trajectory must’ve been—”
Jesus. Peter Burke and his everlasting, immortal skepticism.
“I rushed him,” Neal lies. As he does, he hides his wince. This has to be one of the most poorly thought-out lies of his life. This could get him in deep shit. “I tried to take his gun, knock him out. He retaliated.”
Peter’s quiet. The plane rocks. Mild turbulence stirs Neal’s leg; he grits his teeth. The crystal blue out the window mocks him like a diamond he can’t swipe.
“Why are you lying?” Peter asks, at last.//
Peter finds out the specifics of Neal’s gunshot wound after Cape Verde.

Summary
“God-damnit, Neal, where is it?” Peter almost shouts, and Neal senses the activity in the bullpen halt completely. He steps back, trying to hide the tremble in his hands, wishing he hadn’t left his hat on Peter’s desk, wanting something to hide the emotion on his face—
He pushes the door closed on the two of them numbly, exhales shakily, and lets a part of him go up in smoke when he flattens the look in his eyes and meets Peter’s. “I didn’t steal it, and I don’t know where it is,” he lies, straight to his handler’s face.//
After the U-boat fiasco and Adler’s death, Neal decides to confess the location of the treasure to Peter. It doesn’t go as planned.
