'David leaned forward without meaning to. The boy stepped out. At first, all David saw was the bandage- white, wrapped tight across the lower half of the face. A performer’s trick. Anticipation curled in his gut. Then the bandage came away. The crowd gasped. Someone screamed. Someone laughed. David felt nothing, and then everything. The smile was wrong. Not a smile at all, but a wound. A blood-bright gash carved too wide, too deep, pulled into a permanent shape of joy that had never once been felt. Ragged skin. Exposed teeth. A devil’s grin sculpted into flesh. And above it- Eyes. Deep. Blue. Vast. Eyes that held heaven in a face from hell.
David’s breath hitched.
Grinpayne sang. The voice was raw. Real. It scraped its way out of a chest that had learned how to survive pain by turning it into sound. He sang of monsters. Of knives. Of stars stripped from the sky. Of being made into something and left alive to feel it.
David did not laugh. He did not scream. He stood perfectly still, heart slamming against his ribs, because something inside him had just been split open and he did not know how to close it again.
“Oh,” he whispered, reverent and ruined. “Oh my God.” '
