She still thinks about it sometimes. That line of red tape around the hospital bed. That thin little border that no one could cross. She had wondered, at the time, what the consequences would be if she slid the tip of her toe over the line.

Summary
If the dreams felt like recapitulation – like she was reliving something, trying to work out a secret meaning – maybe she could have written them off more easily. If the dreams had been stranger, more sublime or surreal, she could safely categorize them as symbolic, the way dreams are supposed to be. But why is she dreaming about, say, a grocery store? Why, in the dream of a grocery store, does Frank Castle come to greet her with an armful of leeks and a case of beer? It’s just so specific. And the little things are always right – the way, for example, that he always smells like coffee, and leather, and charcoal, and something a little more acrid that she remembers but can’t quite name.
The point is, for a dead man and a known killer, he sure is hard to shake, and it’s not for lack of trying.
***
This is the story of how: 1) a dead guy just can't quite stick to the shadows; 2) Karen Page learns, by necessity, how to throw a punch; 3) we all learn, by necessity, not to tell a woman what she is and isn't.

Karen hadn't planned this. She hadn't planned any of this. In fact, she could distinctly remember telling Frank Castle he was dead to her. He had responded with, "I'm already dead," before slamming the door on her, which had made her think that he'd understood what she had meant.
And yet there he sat on her couch, eating cereal from her favorite bowl like some goddamned frat boy.

Summary
When Karen opens the door Frank’s standing in the hallway, his face shadowed by the hood pulled up over his head and the dim light above her front door. She looks him over — his face and hands splattered in blood, the sleeve of his jacket torn and soaked through. But that’s not what brings her up short, because honestly, she’s seen him look worse. No, what makes her eyes widen in surprise is the tiny, orange ball of fur tucked into the front pocket of his jacket.
She stares down at the kitten, and it blinks its innocent little eyes up at her and snuggles against Frank’s chest. When she pulls her gaze from the animal back to Frank’s face, there’s a hint of amusement behind his hard expression
He glances down at the kitten and scratches a bloodied finger over the top of its head. “Can we come in?”
