An accidental magical bonding isn't how Childe wanted to become a father, but parents don't really get to choose their children, do they? He's only giving up a year of his life, just until the baby can bond with her birth father, but it's still a year of his life. Zhongli is as refined as ever, the perfect picture of patience and serenity, even as he watches Childe zone out, his mind straying far from his body,
He’s beautiful.
In a few weeks, Childe will die because he cannot love anyone but a god he has never even seen the face of.
But for now, Zhongli is smiling and radiant, and Childe can pretend the flowers tangling in his throat are for him.
Childe smiles back.
Or, Childe cannot fathom Zhongli being Rex Lapis, so he deludes himself into believing the desire to fight Rex Lapis is love, especially since he doesn't think he's capable of love in the first place.
