Summary
The heat of Rafayel’s body presses in on her. The edge of his dagger’s poised like a fine wire across her throat. It isn’t exactly how she’d choose to start her first real conversation with her former subordinate-cum-roommate-cum-lover-cum-sexually-charged-nemesis-cum-hostage, but she’s left with no other choice but to make do.
She pushes the muzzle of her gun into his side, just to alert him that it’s there. His eyes go wide, darting down and back again at the pressure. Raising her hand and smiling in cheeky surrender, she says, “I can explain?”
Tamino and his supervisor reunite.

Summary
Any smart remark he had for her withers on his tongue. After a few moments of his dumb staring, she frowns at him over the table. “Earth to Rafayel? You okay?”
The answer is no. He’s fucked, actually, because she smells heavenly, the air around her laced with a musk that’s earthy and honey-sweet. Apparently, it wasn’t enough that the Praedator virus robbed him of his memory, privileges, and agency. It had to curse him with the ability to smell when she was fertile too.

Summary
Maybe someone else designed this moment. Put the two of you together like this. Like it isn’t the accident upon accident your meetings have always been. Maybe this doesn’t need to be pieced together.
“You heard about what happened in Bloomshore District,” you say.
Rafayel takes a long sip, wearing the mug’s label like some weird badge of pride. “Who hasn’t?”
Your teeth sink hard into your lip, worrying like a pulse every time the blast replays itself, every time you can practically feel the lick of the flames or the grit of the hard pavement or the smoke in your eyes. “That was my grandma’s house.”

Or, the five stages of grief after you lose Caleb. Or, the five stages of grief as you fall in love with Rafayel.

Summary
Lady Ainsleigh is everything society admires: poised, gentle, perfectly devoted to Lord Devrick Ainsleigh. Behind Rosemere Hall’s doors, that devotion is enforced with fists and forced smiles, each month without an heir marked in bruises where no one will see.
At a glittering ball, one person does see. Lord Xavier Meriden, newly returned from war and quietly infamous for the secrets he keeps, watches the way her shoulders flinch under her husband’s hand. When violence spills a little too close to public view, he intervenes with a spy’s precision—and offers her something no one else ever has: a choice.Sheltered in Evermere House, Lady Ainsleigh becomes more than a victim. With Xavier’s help, she learns to read ledgers and lies, turning whispers of war-time embezzlement into a weapon. As they unmake her husband’s power, another, gentler danger emerges between them: a love built not on rescue, but on recognition.
