In the aftermath, the bounty hunter he loves nearly as much as he abhors, sees him for who he really is. Love ain’t enough on all these dead-end highways, but in Chains’ arms, Hatchet loses the distinction between acceptance and salvation.

Hatchet and Chains thought they’d earned a break. A month chasing bounties and sleeping in the dirt ought to buy a man a few days of whiskey and cards in Gallow’s Junction. But apparently, the demons didn’t get the memo. By a dame’s say-so, lava demons have come crawling into their own homestead, and they aim to see the bounty hunters dead before sunrise. So much for a vacation.

Summary
Many ANBU accept an invitation to feel as though they have meaning again, to protect the village the way they couldn't protect others. If they don't feel this way upon joining, they will very quickly. No ANBU stays unhaunted for long.
It's not uncommon for these advanced shinobi to come home in the earliest hours of the morning, beaten and broken from their long, grueling solo missions, their mind and body slowly slipping away into a state that no one on the outside could possibly understand. The horrors they saw could not be explained, and they were a danger to all around them.
