Hermione reminds herself of this. Survival. She can fix this, if only she can survive. The war has made this a task she is equipped for. Marrying Draco Malfoy will hardly be the worst thing she's ever endured.

Essek is shaking once he’s sat there for twenty minutes. He’s thirsty. He wants to walk over to the jug of cold water on the table by the door. He needs to get up. He can’t.
He won't cry. It’s stupid to cry over this.
Verin gurgles.
“I hate you.” Essek curls his fingers around his elbows. “I hate you. I hate you.”For as long as Essek can remember, he has been cursed to obey. He has managed, in his own way, to mitigate the consequences of the curse while pursuing his academic and personal desires. It is only after being commanded to act as a guide for the Mighty Nein that it becomes a true complication.

"It’s a beautiful day at the Soltryce Academy—the sky is vibrant and the trees rustle with the gentlest of winds as Caleb begins his impromptu Transmutation lecture outside. From the building on the edge of the grounds he hears a muffled bell tolling for fifth period. Somewhere in the distance, a student begins to whistle.
At that moment, Caleb feels at peace.
At that moment, a Purple Worm bursts forth from the soil directly in front of him, and all of his plans for a pleasant afternoon are promptly dashed."

Caleb and Essek have finally settled down - more or less. While the beloved and somewhat eccentric Professor Widogast is busy inciting small student-scale riots and teaching tiny wizards morals, Essek spends his days lounging around the house, drinking wine and experimenting with the exotic concept of 'cooking his own meals'. They are pretty sure life is great - until two pre-teen assassins crash-land into the middle of the Soltryce Academy and demand the former Shadowhand be surrendered to their custody. What are the two internationally in/famous mages to do? The answer will shock absolutely no one. -

There are eight distinct words for various types of “Alliances” in Undercommon. Unfortunately, an inexperienced translator might mis-translate all meanings of the word to “Alliance” in Common.
Caleb and Essek accidentally agree to a romantic “Alliance” for the sake of continued peace between the Empire and the Dynasty.
