    “But?” Eraserhead interrupts, his voice sharp.

    Ayao swallows again, fidgeting with her charts. Her eyes flicker over to Eri, who is mostly a bundle of fear-fear-fear with a quiet, wondering twinge of hope lapping at the edges.

    “She’s behind on most of her vaccines,” Ayao says, well-aware of what this means for a little girl who had stared, white-lipped as the nurses had withdrawn blood before, her eyes constantly flickering between the syringes and her newfound black-clad protector.
