Loki knows that the time travel-related events that led to him escaping Stark Tower with the Tesseract will have created alternate realities—branches in the time stream, as it were.
Loki supposes that means there might be an alternate reality out there where Sif did not die in the Dark Elf attack—maybe even one where she does not hate him.
Loki is a bit obsessed with finding such an alternate reality.
