    This is the first of a series of essays I wish to write on the Gender Politics of Sherlock fandom. There are many things I wanted to say at the official panel but was unable to, since it was derailed by a group of individuals who showed up with the intention of intimidating and harassing the panel moderator. In future essays, I’d like to share my thoughts on femslash, Mary Sues and the fridging of female characters, on heteronormativity in slash, and on queer representation beyond slash (bisexual, pansexual, asexual and trans people in fanworks and fan spaces). I’d like to touch on race and being a queer Woman of Color in a fandom mostly interested in White male characters.

    Before I get to those subjects, however, I feel a need to return to the original intended topic: the essay I began writing on my phone on the plane.

    And that essay is on the subject of noncon fanworks.

    Also: Final three chapters are an author's note, a chapter draft, and a note/outline for the rest of the story. Little sad this one wasn't finished when what was already here was so enjoyable, and what was planned also seemed very cool, but it had the "unfinished and discontinued" tag before I started reading, so I got myself into this knowingly.

    “Hey,” the kid says, offering a gloved hand. “I’m Spider-Man.”

    Jason stares at the hand. “Get. Out of. My face.”

    “Cool, me too,” the kid says as if that made any fucking sense. “But also, there’s, like, a very large man with a weird Red Riding Hood thing going on pointing a gun at my face, so I’m calling this a teachable moment.”

    “I don’t point guns at faces,” Jason says. He absolutely does. “I point them at kneecaps.”

    The kid’s hand hovers in the air a second longer, then drops. He bounces on the balls of his feet, kinetic energy with a conscience. “So what’s your deal? Big red bucket, voice modulator set to ‘haunt my enemies,’ a fashionable assortment of weapons. Batman adjacent?”

    “Batman distant,” Jason says. “And the deal is: you’re in my territory.”

    “Oh. Sorry! I didn’t know territories were, like, a thing. Do you have a flag? I can make a flag. I’m very DIY when it comes to silk-based products.”

    Jason racks the pistol and holsters it because if he doesn’t, he’s going to do something unhelpful, like shoot this idiot charmingly dead.

    Jason's fifteen when he dies for the first time. He's eighteen when he comes back to Gotham for vengeance, and dies again. But for some reason that second death doesn't last any more than the first one did, and Jason comes to the realization that something, somewhere, is keeping him alive.
