“I have news,” he said plainly. “Stilgar found someone in the desert, remarkably alive, all things considered.”
She dared not to hope. Her mouth opened and closed but no word came out of it.
“An Atreides soldier, mom,” he swallowed. “Someone who knew of what happened in the complex and made it out.”
She slammed her eyes shut to stop the overflowing of tears – what useless thing it was, her current inability to control her emotions – she choked, “Oh.”
Her son looked into her eyes, a glimmer of… something.
Do not hope, she scolded herself. Hope is a fickle little thing and –
“Dad might be alive.”

Paul should not be blamed for what happened next.
Again, he must reiterate that he was fully conscious of why his parents had a functioning relationship as Duke and concubine instead of man and wife. Even though he did not understand why for all that they’ve loved each other, his parents would choose to live this way. Especially when they stood to lose everything with this move to Arrakis to quite possibly meet their end – Shaddam’s intentions were not exactly subtle.
So, it seems logical to Paul that they should go out with a metaphorical bang.
“What if,” he raised his voice in the war room. “I have an idea that could cause enough attention that renders us less of a threat to the Emperor? After all, he is just afraid of our growing standing in the Imperium.”
