He is whatever puts Thomas first. But that changes so often that he doesn’t know what he is beyond that.
He is Janus when he is alone, but only when he is not someone else.
Janus has never minded the fact that his identity is fluid, ever-changing. He acts as whoever Thomas needs him to be in the moment, and if that means he doesn't know much about himself as an individual, well. It's never been a problem for him.Until he gives away his name, and then it very much is.

Summary
He walks forward, crouching over the snake, and when it doesn’t stir at all, he works up his courage and pokes it, just a little. Its scales are warm and smooth under his fingertip, and he resists the urge to stroke them. He doubts he could get away with that.
“Janus?” he asks, trying to keep the somewhat hysterical laughter from his voice. “That you?”
Thomas didn't know that Janus could turn into an actual snake, but he's glad to hang out with him regardless. More than glad; ecstatic, even, because he's been trying to figure out how to befriend him for ages, and this seems like a good first step. What he can't figure out is why human-Janus is being so weird about it.
(Alternatively: Janus doesn't trust easily. He wishes he could stop trusting Thomas— it would be so much less terrifying.)

“This is really, really, really weird,” Thomas tried again, looking down at his changed clothes. He was wearing a lab coat, over a black dress shirt and pants, but there wasn’t even a tie.
His attention flicked to the giant fan-shaped thing in the corner, conspicuously dustless and surrounded by fallen papers. Thomas ventured toward it, braced for Virgil to shout and make him jump about eight feet in the air, but nothing happened.
He picked up the papers, finding a manila folder and paper clips next to it, and frowned. It was some kind of file, with an image of the fan thing and a pug-faced white guy with the name Arnim Zola printed under him in letter type. There was an skull-and-octopus insignia in the corner of the page, completely unfamiliar.
Everything about the situation was completely unfamiliar. It didn’t really feel like a dream.

Or: Thomas gets brain-swapped with a version of himself who works for an evil organization in a world of superheroes.
No one is happy about this.
