Summary
“Buck,” he said gently, taking a step forward.
Bucky looked up and met his gaze with glossy eyes. “It’s different.”
“What is?”
He looked back down at the papers in front of him. “Seeing it in print.”
Steve swallowed, unsure of a response.
“Have you read this?”
He shook his head. “No, Buck. And I won’t if you don’t want me to.”
Bucky didn’t answer for several minutes. Eventually he gathered the papers and slid them back into the folder. He stood from the table, pressing the file into Steve’s chest. “You should,” he said, his voice grave. “You should know what I’m capable of, what I’ve done.”
OR
Bucky waits for Steve to come home from the hospital following the events on the helicarriers, though he doesn't fully understand why. They embark on a cross country journey before being snapped back into reality. Story of healing, promises, guilt, shame, avoidance, forgiveness, family, and love.

Summary
It takes a moment for Steve to add up the features on the man in front of him: those blue-grey eyes, a cleft chin, high cheekbones. Sure, he's older, dirtier, taller, but there's only one person Steve knew who looked like that. "Bucky?" he asks. "Bucky Barnes?" It's been so long since he's said that name out loud.
"Yeah, I..." Bucky pauses. "Oh fuck," he says. "I missed my stop."
Steve smiles. “Wanna get a burger?” he asks, noting the happy coincidence that Bucky Barnes, of all the people in New York, fell asleep in the same subway car that Steve would walk into, and missed his stop.
“Sure,” Bucky says with a shrug. “I could eat.”

Summary
When Steve finally finds Bucky in the Russian wilderness, it seems entirely reasonable to join him on his mission to destroy a Hydra base. The plan is solid, and whatever Bucky remembers of him or of them, they still work well together.
Only things go sideways, and Steve is gravely injured, leaving him stuck in a wreck of his own making with a former lover who may not even remember him and no way for them to call for help.

“Here’s how I see it,” the psychiatrist says. “In 2014, you discovered your employer was the old Nazi organization you died to stop. You found out your best friend, who had died in front of you, was actually a POW who had been brainwashed and tortured. Said best friend vanishes after trying to kill you. Two weeks later, you disappear as well. That sounds like someone vulnerable to radicalization.”
Steve closes his eyes, tries to visualize Bucky sitting among the flowers, outside their home. The dogs are playing around him. “I want a lawyer.”
