    “Mr. Talis, bored already?” Viktor asked, his tone dry but laced with the faintest trace of amusement.
    Jayce grabbed a chair from the back with an ear-splitting scrape of metal on tile, the sound grating against Viktor’s nerves. Viktor visibly flinched, cringing at the noise. The class burst into laughter at the reaction, while Jayce offered a sheepish grin, clearly unapologetic. He flopped into the chair, sprawling in a lazy posture that made it seem like he belonged here.
    “Had a free period,” Jayce said with a shrug, his voice light and breezy. He propped his head on his hand, his grin widening. “And I’m always fascinated by science.”

    "These are remarkably . . . detailed," Viktor murmurs, studying the page. His fingers hover just above the paper—careful not to smudge the graphite. "I was not aware I furrow my brow so often."

    "You do. Usually when you're deep in thought, which is most of the time."

    "One could argue you know me quite well."

    Jayce bites his lip. He feels warm.

    Viktor stumbles upon a secret in Jayce's sketchbook—pages filled with sketches of him—and Jayce panics. It doesn't go as expected.
