Vierzehn Winter zuvor bringt die heidnische Frau des Dorfpriesters in Veltheim ein Mädchen zur Welt: Irmina. Sie wächst in einer Zeit dunklen Aberglaubens auf, gegen den ihr Vater grausam zu Felde zieht. Als Irminas fremdartiges Wesen und das sächsische Blut ihrer Mutter ihr zum Verhängnis werden, wird Veltheim von einem schrecklichen Verbrechen heimgesucht, das Irminas Schicksal für immer verändern soll.
Seit dem Tod seiner Mutter und seiner ungeborenen Schwester herrscht Schweigen zwischen Rotzbakke und seinem Vater. Kotzbakke weiß nicht, was er mit seinem übereifrigen Sohn anfangen soll, und zieht es vor, seine väterlichen Pflichten zu meiden. Als er zu einem Raubzug in die südlichen Lande aufbricht, hätte Rotzbakke nie ahnen können, dass das schmächtige, unscheinbare Mädchen, das sein Vater als Kriegsbeute mit nach Hause schleppt, seine Sicht auf die Welt für immer verändern würde.

Irritiert zieht er die Augenbrauen zusammen, vermutlich darüber philosophierend, ob ich mich über seinen Namen lustig mache oder einfach nur gestört bin.
„Willst du mir deine Gedanken vielleicht mitteilen, damit wir anderen auch lachen können?“, entgegnet er gereizt, doch ich schüttele nur den Kopf.
