"Shh, okay, here comes the pod," Kyle says. Stan isn't normally claustrophobic, but after barely squeezing through that cave the idea of being snapped into a self-piloted pod is terrifying. "I'll ride with you," Kyle says before Stan can ask him to. He's stroking Stan's helmet as if it's his cheek.
Kyle rolled onto his side, facing the screen, and when he pressed back against Stan and wiggled a little Stan's hips shoved forward without his permission. Kyle turned to smile at Stan over his shoulder, and Stan was done for, in love, ten seconds away from coming in his pants.
"It's just that I'm so terrified of being away from you," Kyle says, closing his fist around Stan's ear. "I was nauseous the whole time you were on the planet, even before the emergency call. It's messed up, how much I depend on you. There's this entire universe that I could access if I wanted to, but I'm still on the ship I was born on, and I'm happy here, Stan. What does that mean about me? About my – simplicity?"

"Don't tell me any more," Stan says. It's true that they're a long way from sixty-one, barely into their twenties, but he can't imagine any amount of years with Kyle feeling like enough.
Kyle stops reading, and Stan stares at him, astounded. This is not the sort of thing Cartman is capable of inventing.
“Well, of course not," Stan says. It resembles Kyle quite a lot, actually, when he's pretending to be disaffected and cynical in order to protect himself from some disappointment. "It wasn't you, after all, so why should it sound like you?”
Something like adrenaline is keeping him from processing all but the rawest shock, and if he wasn't trying to hold Kyle with both arms he might not even know that he's only got a left arm now, the other one floating off behind him like all the bodies his DNA has burned through the past two thousand years.
He feels almost comfortable as his eyes fall shut, and then very much so. In his mind or in his next life he's a baby in Kyle's arms, recognizing the tears that drop down onto his cheeks when Kyle kisses them, some part of him remembering the way they fogged his helmet on an unnamed planet. He's a child who can't make it through a nightmare without sneaking into Kyle's room, crawling into his bed, wrapping himself in the smell of his one familiar thing. Stan will have Kyle again: he can feel it now. He might already be back in Kyle's arms

Percy hums sympathetically and rubs between her shoulder-blades the way she likes. There’s the crunch of him beginning to devour his apple, but that’s all—he leaves her be. In that moment, Annabeth is positive that he is the very best friend that she has ever had and ever will have.
It never fails to make him laugh. Annabeth doesn’t bother wondering how many of those arrests never would’ve happened if she wasn’t so taken with the exact sparkle in Percy’s eyes when he laughed
Percy looks at her as though she’s saved him from plummeting to his death instead of a mildly awkward conversation. Though, she figures for Percy they’re much the same
Annabeth smiles into her coffee. It’s early in the day to claim it, but she’s relatively sure this is already the best Christmas she’s ever had. Even if she had woken up by Percy smacking her in the face with a pillow—honestly, that probably contributed to it. Gross.
Sure, Dad,” Annabeth agrees. “I’d like that.” She can’t quite figure out if it’s the truth or a white lie, wondering if it at all matters
She gives him his happy ending last, eyelids droopy, the taste of it almost sickly sweet. It’s thousands of years old, but right now it’s also hers, and her story will always end with Percy’s happiness.
This is Annabeth’s favorite Elaine, the one just a little too busy to look critically at whatever she’s doing or not doing. With this Elaine, every small offer of help is thanked effusively. For this Elaine, Annabeth can sometimes pretend to be a perfect daughter.
Her step-mom hums. “You were so exceptionally bright. I know you know that, but it was striking. It seemed impossible not to fall in love with the two of you. I mean, I saw this single father who got his PhD while raising you, with practically no help, and you turned out so brilliant. So curious about everything. You asked me all about how x-rays worked and listened so carefully to my explanation; I don’t know if you remember that. It was hard not to love someone who raised such a beautiful little girl.”
Annabeth grins into his shoulder. She doesn’t know why she would even bother to get to know people in San Francisco when she could just keep knowing Percy instead
Percy looks good. He looks kind of criminally good, actually, with a few buttons undone on his white shirt and his shoulders filling out the suit jacket just about perfectly. It even looks like he tried to make his hair behave, and he’s smiling a little nervously, and it’s...cute. He looks cute.

His eyes fasten on Prim, and she shakes her head at him. "No," she breathes. "No. No! She's up there! You were supposed to get her! No!" She makes to move to the stairs, shoving Rory aside when he reaches for her; she wrenches her arm from his grasp with a fury he didn't know Prim possessed.
Actually, that isn't true. Katniss might have known, but she thought it wasn't her business, or it wasn't important, and there wasn't a reason to tell him. It doesn't matter. Except it does. It matters because he wants to ask her what she knew, and he can't. He wants to ask her what she thinks, and he can't. He wants to ask her anything, wants to talk to her, wants to hold her hand, wants to be with her right now. But she's gone, and he can't.
"Don't." Prim swallows visibly, and her hands are fisted at her sides. "Don't. Don't act like you understand. You don't. I know that you lost Posy, but it's not the same. It's not, and it's—I know that's a terrible thing to say, okay? I know. But it's the truth. It's not the same." She explodes. "Katniss raised me! I would've starved without her, and—and do you think I would've survived the Games? She was always there! Always! I wasn't supposed to lose her!"
She laughed, nosing his cheek, and her eyes were bright when he met them at last. He decides that she must have been in love with him that day, and he wants to go back: to that day, to that bed. But that day's gone, and he rolls over in the bed he's in now, wiping his eyes.

In her head, she’d explained it away with the simple, I owe him a debt. In reality, it had more to do with the cut of his jaw and how his lazy grin made her insides go liquid.
She wants to ask the real question, if he knows who he is, but it doesn’t come out right. Who are you comes out instead, like Annabeth doesn’t know. Like she isn’t able to recognize even this version of him.
Percy gulped. Annabeth realized, for the first time, that the painfully casual way he leaned against her workstation actually looked a little forced. His fingers drummed against his thigh.
Percy wants to turn his head, to instead look over at his mother, but he hadn’t done that in the moment as a child and can’t do it now.

She starts to laugh, burying her face in her hands, and Huck sees her laughter and starts to giggle, too, looking happily at his mama.

Maybe if I weren’t in love with her, she’d be completely easy to read. I wouldn’t waste time wondering what it means when she stares at my arms the same way I stare at the nape of her neck. Especially when I’m not Gale Hawthorne.
I’d compare myself to the prey she hunts in the woods, but I don’t think any prey has ever been looked at like they’re something precious. It’s enough to steal back the breath I'm trying to catch.
