“Oh, sweetheart,” Tommy said, big hands sliding under his knees and pulling him down the chair until Buck was practically sitting in his lap, his legs draped over Tommy’s thighs and their chests brushing. All he had to do was lean the slightest bit forward and his face would be pressed into one broad shoulder. “You got good news, didn’t you?”
“You think this means good news?” he demanded, swiping at his eyes. “Maybe I got turned down. Maybe they don’t want me.”
Tommy’s smile was so fond. “You wouldn’t be crying like your heart was breaking if we were staying here.”

“Thanks,” Tommy says softly, taking the records. “Sorry.”
“You keep saying that, but I don't know why,” Buck says, aiming for teasing and just sounding as concerned as he feels.
Tommy's lips press together, and he blinks right before his eyes get shiny. “My father died last week.”
Buck remembers the shocked, numb feeling that followed him for days after Bobby died. Weeks, really. But he knows Tommy had a complicated relationship with his dad, even though he rarely talked about it. Just like they rarely talked about anything.
“I'm sorry,” he says, even though it feels insufficient. “Did you eat today?”

Summary
Buck had this idea, at first, of taking things slow. Of making sure of his own feelings, then of making sure it was very obvious that this went well beyond a hookup for him. They have taken it relatively slow but the truth of all of those things became abundantly clear to Buck, and undoubtedly to Tommy too, within probably three days of ‘good morning’ texts and invitations to go hiking in the LA foothills.
(Or: Buck and Tommy on the morning after the single longest night and day.)

Summary
Tommy’s gaze slides lazily around the crowded room as he waits for Lucy to return. None of this had ever really been his scene: the pumping bass, the dim lights, the sweaty bodies gyrating together in one big mass. Even when he’d first started hooking up with men, he’d only stay in places like this long enough to follow an interested party into some dark corner before suggesting they relocate to somewhere more private.
Then Tommy’s eyes catch on a familiar head of curly hair at the bar, and time seems to slow down.
