    Hope laughs. “We both know that you and I were meant for this. Doesn’t matter how much you try to ‘change the story’— fate is fate.” She says the words mockingly, making it clear that she’s referring to the exact thing she said to Josie when she was lost to dark magic.

    It stings, like salt in an open wound. Did she really not believe what she said, back then?

    No, Josie knows she does. It’s just that her humanity is off. It’s only the most hurt and buried parts of Hope speaking right now. Josie can’t lose sight of that or they’re never going to get out of this.

    “You’re trying to prove that to yourself, aren’t you?” she asks, a tremor in her voice. “That’s why you brought me along. Did you even stop by the school for weapons, or was it an excuse to take me with you and prove this lie you’re telling yourself?”
