Summary
The ruin and rebirth of Jake "Hangman" Seresin. Jake has spent his entire life slowly building a wall between himself and the rest of the world. That wall becomes a mask, and when he joins the Navy, that mask is given a name. Hangman. It's his shield. His armor. After the "suicide mission", he's stripped bare, his mask is gone and all that's left is Jake.
Bradley Bradford Bradshaw (insert joke here) has spent his life surrounded by ghosts. He lost his father at a young age; young enough to remember him, but too young to understand grief. When he's 17 his mother dies, and he understands grief then. Not just his own, but his mother's too. He's watched his mother grieve the loss of his father for as long as he can remember. He can't help but think that, if this is love, than he wants no part of it. When Mav pulls his papers, he resents love even more. (Bradley feels like he's living his life in reverse. He's emotionally dead at a young age, and Jake slowly brings him back to life.) When Jake and Bradley meet it's love at first sight - or, in their case - love at first fight. And neither one of them know what to do. They spend the next eight years figuring it out.
