Summary
“Why do they do that?” Frisk asks, scrambling over a fallen pillar in the RUINs that Chara just simply floats over.
“Do what?” He(?) asks back, looking behind him… (her? Frisk still can’t tell or understand) to look at Frisk, brows furrowed in confusion. They think back to the Whimsum they just encountered, and try to remember if they’d done anything weird.
“The monsters. They uh. They don’t call me he? Or she? They just….” Frisk jumps down finally, hitting the ground harder than they’d expected, but landing on their feet anyways. They stumble forward a bit, and Chara doesn’t bother moving to help them. “They call me they. Not like….” They search for the words and they don’t come. Instead they just hold out their upturned hands in a confused gesture. “It’s… just not normal, I guess. It’s different.”
“But good different, right?” Chara says, blinking at them. Frisk blinks back, and they stand there for a moment, thinking. Then they nod.

Summary
Chara’s thoroughly asleep. Conked out. He knows Chara said they don’t really sleep that deeply anymore, but they sure could fool him. They look, pun aside, dead to the world, eyes closed and face turned up to the sun. Their skin is pale, and Their eyes have that reddish hue on the skin under them. A hand rests on their stomach, the other is strewn across the flowered floor. There are golden petals in their hair. Frisk spends a long time just staring at them. They sit up properly, the warmth of the sun now aimed on their head and scalp as they do. If it weren’t for the fact Chara hasn’t drawn a single breath in the entire time she's known them, she'd have never believed they were a ghost. Okay, well, the translucency was a dead giveaway, but other than that— sure, they're pale, sure, they looks a bit sickly, but he wouldn’t say dead. There’s just so much… life to them.
Or; Frisk decides what they want. And though Chara might not agree, it's for the better.

“What did you get? I wasn’t watching.” Chara asks, looking over at them. “Hopefully some healing items, right? I mean… Papyrus is supposedly up ahead, according to that awful comedian.”
“His jokes aren’t that bad. And you laughed at the stop sign thing.” Frisk says, and Chara can’t help how their own face starts slowly cracking into a smile as well. They float around them, onto her other side, trying to peek at what she has in her hands. Frisk makes a face at them, and he holds it just out of their line of sight.
“I had something in my throat.”
“As a ghost?” Frisk snorts, starting to walk, snow squeaking under their feet.
Chara huffs, but plays along. “I coughed!! What, can a ghost not cough anymore?? Anyways, you’re dodging the question. What’d you get??”
Or; a brief shopping trip and some chatter before conflict.

Summary
Though it has a set destination, the bright red thread does not rush. It meanders, it mosies. Fate is almost playful in nature, as fickle a thing it is. It reaches the child’s wrist first, loops around it like a cat would one’s legs when greeting a long lost friend. The child’s pointer finger twitches, but there is no other reaction. The spirited, mischievous thread of Determination itself then rushes forward, winding itself into its destination. It loops, it twirls, until it finally makes its way to the desaturated remnants of their SOUL.
Chara’s eyes snap open. The thread pulls taut. Their eyes are the same shade of it, the dazzling red of determination bleeding into the darkness around them, dyeing their pale skin and shirt with its brilliance. The moment Frisk hits the ground, the world pulses with the red of determination, the metaphysical shockwave of it far outlasting the flash of light, and the timeline changes hands, for the first time in close to a century.
Or; At the beginning of every story, there is a Fall. In this one, it happens in the beginning. And the middle. And the End.

Neuvillette hadn’t been awake, hadn’t even been conscious. Now Wriothesley feels frozen in place, like he’s iced his own boots to the floor with a blast of misguided Cryo.
Neuvillette considers, a small line furrowing his brow. “I… think I might need you to, yes.”
