Summary
In the beginning, it was circumstance that led him to the Canyonlands. In the end, it was failure that brought him back. Foolish in his belief that being done with the Legion meant the Legion would be done with him, ex-Legate Joshua Graham struggles with introspection, with his old ways, and with the curious new charge who ended up face-down on God's doorstep.
Caesar ran a series of aptitude tests on select adolescent recruits for years, striking gold when his cartographer's apprentice--the boy the captures from the Salt Lake tribe called Foxtrot--tested low in empathy and high in manipulativeness. For the Fox of the Wasteland, what started as learning to map-make for the Legion and lying when he got caught by the tribals he observed, quickly became a game of espionage, assessing defenses, and exploiting weaknesses. They were all figurines to move across the playing field and he was five moves ahead... Maybe that's why he enjoyed chasing the wildcard so much.
(This is a Post-First-Battle-of-Hoover-Dam fan-fiction set in early 2281. I hope angst is your cup of tea, because it will overflow).
