Summary
Egon had been alerted to his brother's death by a funeral invitation posted to him by his Great Aunt Eva. In Loving Memory of Charles and Delia Deetz, the invitation had read. There'd been a date, time, and address for the funeral. Egon hadn't gone. In fact, he'd practically forgotten about the whole affair until he received an unexpected phone call the next week.
The person calling had said they were from the Department of Children and Families (or something like that). And the upshot of the discussion was that they'd wanted Egon to take in his orphaned niece. The niece was fifteen years old. Her name was Lydia. (He'd remembered being introduced to his brother's daughter previously, but had forgotten her name.) Lydia Deetz. Charles had changed his surname somewhere along the way - was it when he married his first wife? Egon had never asked why.
Sceptical though he was about his own child-rearing abilities, Egon had concluded that being rejected by her closest living relative would only have a negative consequences for his niece's emotional wellbeing and development. He'd agreed to at least try taking her in.
