“It’s a foolproof plan,” Connie continued. “Remember eighth grade? That Snow White play we had to do for the school festival?”
Immediately, Jean’s stomach dropped. Across the table, Armin made a face like he just remembered a trauma.
“You mean the one where Eren was supposed to be Prince Charming?” Reiner said. “But bailed last-minute to work the cheeseburger stand, so Jean had to step in?”
“Yes! That one!” Connie said, eyes gleaming like a madman. “And the teachers made Jean wear that dark brown wig so he’d ‘look more like Eren,’ and literally everyone bought it? Even the audience thought it was him!”
“So!” Connie said, clearly very proud of himself. “I present to you: Operation EreMika—except it’s actually Jean as the Eren stand-in!”
It was supposed to be a joke. A prank. A one-time disaster. So why does it feel like she’s seeing right through him? And why does he wish—just a little—that she is?

In every universe she mutters a nonchalant thanks. God it’s so embarrassing. It’s so embarrassing that it keeps him awake some nights. He would groan then, and Connie would ask him, very politely, to shut up.
But there’s no point crying over spilt milk.
Because everything has to die before it gets better. And in every universe it does.
