Or, Gil-galad isn't entirely sure why the sons of Eärendil insist on keeping the last two Fëanorions around, but he is sure that it's all going to end in tears. Given that the sons of Eärendil in question don't feel the need to justify themselves to him, it takes a while for understanding to dawn.
