The man had a great body. That was just a fact. Zhao Yunlan was comfortable in his sexuality to normally admit such things, but this was Lin Jing they were talking about. They were coworkers. He was annoying too, something Zhao Yunlan was reminded of almost every time the man opened his mouth. Also, Zhao Yunlan would bet extra bonuses for the entire department that if Lin Jing was at all interested in any sort of hook up (which Zhao Yunlan definitely didn’t want), that the man would be a top. Zhao Yunlan knew what he liked and when he was younger he had his own share of awkward make outs that lead nowhere because of realized incompatible preferences. He did not need to relive those moments now, especially not with Lin Jing. He’d trust his gaydar on this one.
To Zhao Yunlan's panic, Zhu Hong didn't seem willing to let it go and just watch him be grumpy and frustrated over something he didn't want to do anything about. She took it as a personal mission.
The hardest part was perhaps how oblivious Lin Jing was to all of this. Especially when they had a murder case that always happened on Halloween, and now it was approaching again.

In his conclusion, he was truly inadequate, not because he was unworthy. It was just that he didn't understand the value, until he finally saw someone with a heart. He now lived in the light of that, in the soothing presence of that someone. Two and a half years had passed, and it had been a long time since he'd left.
Of the habits Gui Mian had acquired after he admitted to himself that he, in fact, lived in that place, perhaps the ones that seemed simplest to the eye were the ones that held the greatest meaning.

It had all started with an offhand comment. One that Shen Wei seemed to barely consider worth muttering, but he was stressed to hide nothing from Zhao Yunlan now out of fear of losing the other. He would not have guessed those words would mean anything to anyone. Zhao Yunlan had nodded, acting impassively but Lin Jing could tell the small glint in his friend's eye that gave away when he was planning something. And Lin Jing didn't know what the plan might be, but he had to be involved.

Gui Mian kind of liked it. The pretense. And the way Lin Jing would smile at him when they talked, that was sincere.

Sometimes Lin Jing would stare at Zhao Yunlan's empty shoulder, unavoidable reflections occurring to him. And although he himself possessed all the soulfires, he also felt something essential was missing.
There was so much dust and dark water from the Wangchuan spreading everywhere, forming black mud when they pooled. There were still echoing screams and crashes here and there, from what was yet to break and fall.
Returning there, with a mere human body, was a very high risk. It required more foolishness than courage.
If enlightenment is individual, is it rebellion to make it two souls instead?
