Peter was returning from yet another patrol. In recent days, it was the only thing that kept him minimally distracted—swinging between buildings, confronting petty criminals, pretending it still made a difference. The rest of his life was a complete disaster. Gwen had chosen to stay with Harry. Liz didn't want to see him even if he showed up covered in gold. And, as if that weren't enough, he had a nasty fight with Black Cat over her father.
Misfortune after misfortune.
His social and love life — both Peter Parker's and Spider-Man's — were sinking together, like a ship broken in half. Or maybe they had sunk long ago, and he was just clinging to the wreckage.
