“I’m surprised you’re even still alive, sire,” Merlin hears one of the knights saying as he approaches, completely innocent. “You know, considering the constant attempts on your life and all. I mean—”
Merlin still doesn’t know why the words affect him so much, but they do nonetheless; the bundle of firewood falls out of his arms, unbidden, and he isn’t able to hear the clattering sound it makes over the sudden ringing in his ears.
