Ever so softly, fingertips come to wrap around his throat, one after the other. Ed feels each one land in a rush that sinks through his entire body, and he knows his heart is beating fast enough to be a medical concern. He keeps so still, though. He is being so good.
And then there is an entire palm, resting against the warm column of his neck. Stede holds him there, loosely, like an afterthought.

His hand wavers, and in a moment of weakness he grabs the lemon tea instead, and very firmly does not think about what Wei Ying would say. If he would crow in delight and ramble something about corrupting Lan Zhan with his sweet tooth. Would blithely declare that the Lan Sect would be after him soon, for daring to destroy the perfect teeth of their beloved Second Jade. As if Lan Zhan were not already rotting away with all the unspoken sweet nothings he has held behind his teeth, rolled over his tongue, and swallowed back each time.

Summary
Rationally, Jayce is aware that Viktor provokes fights purely for his own enjoyment at least half the time. Not even someone as dead-set on being a bastard can realistically find enough reasons to start an argument as frequently as Viktor does. Rationally, Jayce is aware that he only gives Viktor what he wants when he responds to the provocation with anything other than pure indifference.
It’s real fucking difficult to stay indifferent when Viktor starts talking, though, and the urge to rip him apart is so physically overpowering, Jayce really has no other choice than to at least scream at him a little bit.
Or: Viktor pushes, and Jayce has no other choice than to push back, because his ego has always been fragile like that.

Summary
Sometimes Martin envies type A people their extensive vocabulary of subvocalizations. They get to use their subvocal suite to communicate perfectly reasonable things, like back off and that's mine and hello sexy. Unlike Martin, whose subvocals exist for the sole purpose of making him sound like the biggest, whiniest baby. Especially when he's coming up on a heat.
Martin keeps it under wraps as best he can, but there's only so long he can hold it in. So, sometimes, after a long workday, Martin double-checks that everyone else has left the archives, makes sure the door at the top of the stairs is locked, and lets loose a bit. Throws himself a little pity party. He's entitled to it. He's earned it.
Specifically, it's the kind of pity party that involves relaxing the muscles of his throat, feeling the vibrating thrum building up behind his teeth, and exhaling out a mournful trill of hello? I'm here? Is anyone there? I'm here. I'm all alone.

Jon finds himself torn between a number of different responses, as he hastily tries to figure out how best to summarize yes, Martin, I do, in fact, know what transgender means and of course it makes no difference, why would it and some vague ideas about saying something- something supportive, or at least marginally tactful. Whatever it is one is supposed to do in these sorts of situations, god only knows. He's not a bloody diplomat.
And then his brain does the thing where it can't locate the correct word for a concept, and it automatically substitutes a much more obscure alternative that only barely makes sense in context, and what actually ends up coming out of his mouth is:
"I'm not a plebeian, Martin."
