“Look at you,” Kirsh hums, turning to the side to meet your eyes. He makes no effort to hide how he looks you up and down. “The almost human. The self-hating machine.”
It’s silent. You feel your fist, the human one, clench at your side. You stare ahead at the metallic elevator door and try to keep your composure. The elevator starts its climb. A subtle whirring sound is the only departure from the tense and uncomfortable silence clinging to the air.
“How you must envy me,” the synthetic hums.
You huff in amusement. “Envy isn’t exactly the word I’d use,” you respond dryly, your hands shoved in the pockets of your jacket.
