Rough bark and gnarled branches greeted his sight, lacing each other in a complex spiderweb of wood that silently dared him to penetrate this warm, moist sanctuary of silent, breathy life. Crooked, uneven roots rose between gentle mounds of rich soil and moss-covered rocks. The undergrowth was bathed in dapples of silvery moonlight. Ribbons of shredded mist clung stubbornly to the rough cracks in the old bark. The forest was quiet.

A fragment of a voice, fluttering delicately among the branches, shimmering in the half-light that was closing in on him.
