Summary
Ed and Mary are astronauts from the same town, currently working on a deepspace mission. When not needed on the ship, they can transfer their consciousness to replicas of their bodies on Earth.
Mary goes down occasionally, to visit her children (and to at least check in with her husband-in-name-only, Stede); she begins going down more often after she becomes friends with Evelyn and Doug.
Ed only goes down about once a month, when his friend Fang hosts game nights. He accepted the long-term mission after his mother died, and doesn't really see the point in visiting Earth every day.
Mary, in an effort to give him a new place to explore, suggests that he should stop by her and Stede's house, which is on a lake. He could explore the woods, or take the boat out, maybe try a spot of fishing... Ed gives it a go, but he's not much of a nature guy, and all of that fades into the background anyway once he meets Stede.
With six months left on the mission, Ed feels more hopeful than ever about his future once he returns to Earth.
Until Stede leaves him, and Ed breaks his replica link, and all hope dies.

Summary
Stede gets to the living room, and sure enough, the plate is sitting on the edge of the hearth, right where he remembers leaving it. It is, as Louis and Alma have told him, utterly devoid of cookies, but there are enough crumbs remaining to render his current working theory invalid.
