She could still hear the gasps of their guests when she arrived, still see how his expression had shifted, hands curling at his sides and lips parting as if he had forgotten how to breathe the second he‘d first laid his eyes on her, all draped in silk and lace. She thought back to how the children had tried to keep their little, excited squeals muffled after Hilde had shushed them.
And to how his eyes had never left hers when they had one by one spoken their binding vows.
