Summary
Once upon a time, like a punchline to a joke, a half-demon and a hunter knelt before a grave and talked.
The half-demon reiterated what she knows (what she has just learned) to the hunter. She states that hunters kill all demons. When the hunter confirms it, she verifies “Anything with patterns?”
She is looking at her own.
And this is the key moment, the fulcrum on which a wish swings: Celine does not say, “No”. She does not say that the hunters will spare the half-demon, even if she has patterns, because she is Rumi and she is a person. Celine says, “Cover those up,” and says “You are not like them Rumi.” She says, “Your patterns will go away when you turn the Honmoon gold.” She tells Rumi that she only has patterns because her dad was a demon. Neither of them says that Rumi is not a demon.
Celine says, ‘You can be fixed’ and Rumi hears ‘You can be spared, if you are fixed.’
What Celine tells her is she is different from them, but not different enough.

No. They had always told each other they loved each other. This was nothing new. Nothing to get worked up over. This was just the sappy stuff that girls tell each other when emotions are heightened and you’ve been friends for so long. And when you’ve just faced life or death or a demon apocalypse. You know, just normal girl things.

Or: Zoe and Mira struggle to solidify their on-again/off-again relationship into something more serious, while also coming to terms with their feelings for Rumi. Which would be difficult enough if they weren't all still reeling from the worst month of their lives.

A few weeks after Gwi-Ma’s defeat, Rumi wonders if she can truly consider herself brave. She fights hordes demons and performs in front of huge crowds without a second thought, but being open with the people she loves most scares her so much it feels impossible. As she works to understand what she’s really afraid of, she realizes Zoey and Mira have two questions for her, asked patiently, subtly, softly, until she’s finally ready to face them:
Are you brave enough to love us?
And are you brave enough to let us love you?
