    Rodney lifts his chin in the direction of what John is trying not to consider. He’s unable to stop trying to get a fix on the slithery non-event that is John Sheppard, newly orphaned. Troubleshooting. No, John admits, this is something else, something less calculating, more… more something. John considers exit strategies. He could swim to the mainland, maybe. Out of the corner of his eye, John can see Rodney deciding whether or not to step into the place where John is. Of course he does. It was easier when John thought Rodney was a coward, before Rodney proved him wrong.

    John Sheppard knows a lot about being a hero, but some kinds of courage he has to learn.
