Grape vines can grow on both sides on a fence until pests infest one side. This drains the juices from the growing grapes. While the other thrives due to the chemicals to keep pests away. In the end only one side can thrive while the other dies. Even with the little help of chemicals making it suffer for the lack of nutrients, it keeps away any pests.
