Summary
No one could ever say Youssef Farouk was anything but smart. A*s in chemistry and physics and A’s in biology and statistics on his exams and graduating with degrees in chemistry and physics was proof enough to stop anyone who would ever think anything other than the simple truth that Youssef Farouk was smart.
But sometimes it was hard for Youssef to believe that himself. As the only child in his family, there were times when he felt that he was never enough to please his parents and so he dove deeper and deeper into his school work. While his classmates were going out to the movies and talking about the girls they liked, Youssef added academic extracurricular after extracurricular and got a part-time job to make his university applications stand out, doing whatever he could to work towards the four words he hoped to hear from his father: I’m proud of you.

Summary
Even though Alina never actually played football, it became an integral part of her life both as a child and a young adult, for better or worse. As they grew up, watching Mal play shifted from looking on from the porch at the small field beside the group home to the sidelines of youth league to catching as many of his high school matches as she could. Whenever Mal would score, Alina would cheer and whoop, happy to see her best friend in his element and happy, something being on the pitch always made him feel.
---
As Mal and Alina's relationship changes over the years, one constant remains: football.

Summary
Finally, Alina’s voice broke the silence in a whisper. “How?” she asked, only able to organize her thoughts enough to say a single word. Her face clearly conveyed the shock as she comprehended what the woman told her.
Mariya pushed her glasses up after they slowly slid down her nose in the summer heat, and breathed out. “Well, Alinochka,” the healer said as she moved over to sit next to the stunned younger woman. “When a man and a woman-”
“That’s not what I meant,” Alina said, interrupting the healer as she stood up and began to pace back and forth in front of the small fainting couch that acted as Mariya’s examination space. “Clearly the mechanics of conception have not been an issue,” she breathed out.---
Five years after their "deaths," Alina learns that she is pregnant and she wrestles with the implications a child will have on the life she and Mal have built together.

Summary
Alina’s stomach dropped as she handed over her driver’s license. Saints, she hated how so many things were based on blood. Who was to say that Mal was any less her family simply because they didn’t share blood even though they were truly each other’s family? It’s not like they hadn’t been there for each other through every moment of their lives from grade school to high school and even college. She was his girlfriend, wasn’t that good enough?
Apparently not, so Alina did something she rarely did.
She lied.
“I’m actually his fiancée,” Alina said quickly as the lie rolled off her tongue in a way that, while foreign, felt really good on her tongue. “Mal’s fiancée,” she thought as a smile rose to her face. She liked the sound of that.
---
Alina gets a call about Mal being involved in a car accident and she races to his side. It's an illuminating experience for the both of them.

Summary
“Has he always been that broad?” Alina wondered before quickly telling herself to stop and reprimand herself for even starting down that road of thoughts and doing her best to ignore the knot forming in her stomach. Alina couldn’t ignore that Mal was attractive. She wasn’t blind, she just knew that there was no reason to entertain those thoughts. They were friends and that’s what they would always be. Why should she change the dynamic and risk losing her best friend? And a small infatuation that had recently gotten more prominent in her thoughts was certainly not worth acting upon and messing up the best friendship she has ever had with the most important person in her life.
----
Alina finally acknowledges the feelings she has been harboring, but ignoring, for her best friend and roommate, Mal. Not wanting to mess up what they have, she vows to squash them back down to not lose her best friend. Should be easy, right? -

Summary
Nightmares plagued both him and Alina since the day the Shadow Summoner manipulated Alina’s abilities and expanded the fold into Novokribirsk and almost killed Alina, Mal, and many others. Even though she didn’t like to talk about her dreams, Mal knew Alina’s were worse than his own which were plagued with volcra and disappearing into the fold, giving him an ending just like his parents’. He couldn’t imagine what images visit Alina during the night, so he does what he knows how to do: he holds her and tries to make her smile, doing all he can to make those images flee into the night and never return.

Alina has a nightmare and Mal is there to make sure she knows that it was just a dream.
