(inspired by the many tiktok comments under heartbreaking mlm ship edits going "do they know it's legal now?" I'm here to propose that no, Bucky does not know it's legal now. nobody really talks about the legalization of gay marriage anymore when you really think of it. it doesn't change too much but it's kind of funny that he just...doesn't know).
A short-ish getting together fic where Sam convinces Bucky to go on a mini roadtrip through Texas, through which he finally finds out that gay marriage is legal.

Summary
Sam sat on the far end, elbow resting on the armrest, socked foot pulled up onto the cushion. Bucky had wedged himself between the couch and the coffee table, back against the couch, his head resting near Sam’s knee. Not quite touching. But close. A mug balanced between his hands, steam curling up toward the ceiling fan.
On screen, something exploded. Probably a war movie. Probably not one either of them actually liked, if the glassy, half-bored looks on their faces were any indication. Then Sam reached down. Barely looking, hand dropping into Bucky’s space. Bucky didn’t even blink. Just leaned a fraction to the side, enough for Sam to tug the elastic band out of his hair.
Sarah’s mouth tightened. That’s suspicious. That’s weird.

“I won’t laugh.” Bucky straightens out both his back and his expression and scoots closer, knee colliding with Sam’s own. He keeps it there; it feels hot and solid, even through the kevlar. “C’mon, I promise. Just tell me.”
Sam turns it over in his head for a long moment. Swallows hard. Rubs his palms across his thighs.
“Okay,” he says, looking away. “Do you believe in ghosts, man?”
Bucky laughs, the asshole.
Sam has been haunted all his life. This is the first time he's ever thought of telling anyone about it.

Shaking it off, he whirls around, seeing Bucky’s hand still on Sarah— this time resting easily on her forearm— as the two resume their conversation.
Sam marches right over to the pair, bypassing his nephews as they giggle mischievously and press even more magnets to Bucky’s arm, before he clears his throat a little too forcefully behind the super soldier.
Bucky glances over his shoulder at him, unbothered and unconcerned as a small smirk flickers at the corner of his lips, before smoothing back into the easy-going smile he was aiming at Sam’s sister. Finally, Bucky’s hand drifts from Sarah’s arm as he turns fully to face Sam. “Hey, what time is it? I think I got distracted hearing baby stories about you from Sarah.”
Sam rolls his eyes at him, “It’s time for you to go and stop hitting on my sister.”

Or; everyone can tell Sam and Bucky are into each other except for themselves.
