After loosing his beloved companion Guizhong to the jaws of a predator, Zhongli lived on alone with the promise he had made with her: live on, and never to blame himself for her death.
He huddled under a tree, an infected wound on his leg, alone in the cold, unforgiving winter.
He thought he was finally going to join Guizhong when he got spotted by an unusually golden-pelted tiger, but that did not seem to be the case.
As for said golden tiger, the dark brown bunny before him reminded him of a past event, a trauma that had haunted him since he was a cub. He decided to save the bunny.

"You just don’t get it, do you, Zhongli?”
Before he even had time to react, Childe was in front of him, the bestial mass of armor menacingly glaring down at him. “You aren’t in the position to be making requests, least of all demands,” Childe growled, leaning close, “I never expected such cruel treatment from you, sensei- frankly, I’m quite deeply hurt.”
He should have seen it coming, however, a small part of him still refused to believe it. Refused to believe that Childe would plunge his monstrous hand deep inside Zhongli’s chest, his body sizing up as those claws curled around his Gnosis, severing it from his body. In his last moments of awareness, Zhongli raised his trembling hand, placing it over his chest.
A violet claw enclosed around his hand, a gentle caress against his pale skin, and then everything went dark.

Summary
Zhongli remembered every moment of his life. He would for the rest of time, a blessing and a curse. He remembered the moment he met a mysterious young man on the docks of Liyue harbor, spilling sweet words like tea, purchasing precious artifacts for him and then flitting out of his life. He remembered when he found out that young man was Tartaglia, Eleventh of the Fatui Harbingers.
He remembered when he broke Childe's heart.
So when a near death Childe stumbles his way through the streets of Liyue, Zhongli does the only thing he can think to atone for his mistakes.
Childe manages to escape the Abyss for a second time, finding himself on the streets of a city he longed for almost as much as home. He can feel the life escaping him and he knows his mind has been failing him. His memories are broken and scattered, the only thing clear that all he needs to move forward is the pain in his heart and the rage that comes from it.
Still as he feels life escaping him, he sees memories of a god that betrayed him. A god he would give anything to see one last time, to drink wine with, to hold once more.
And then he wakes up, light and free of the Abyss.

Summary
When Zhongli wakes up in a Snezhnayan palace, his Gnosis gone, his body in pain, and any memory of how he got there erased, he finds himself in a battle to escape the place where shadows come to life, tentacles rise from his sheets, and his body warps in horrific ways.
Watching over him is Tartaglia, one of the two Harbingers sent by the Cryo Archon in order to prepare for the Rite of Descension and Rex Lapis' upcoming 'death'. Why Tartaglia is here is a mystery, as are his intentions, leaving Zhongli to figure out just what the man wants and, more importantly, is he friend or foe?
Trapped. He is trapped.
He needs to leave this place, figure out who is responsible for his capture, and find a way to report their dastardly deed to the Cryo Archon. How he will do this, he isn’t certain, but if he remains here, they can keep him sedated into compliance for as long as they wish, and then he might never be free.
The Cryo Archon might never receive the Geo Archon’s Gnosis, and the people of this cycle might yet find themselves consigned to the same fate as those who came before.
He will not let the actions of a single criminal devastate the fates of his people.

Summary
With the last of his powers, Zhongli creates a contract: to let Childe be born time and time again but he would not be involved with him anymore.
...he creates one last contract. A contract that allows Childe to be reborn again and again. Perhaps it’s cruel of him to not let Childe's soul rest, but this is his last selfish wish.
Silently, he swears to himself to suffer the Wrath of the Rock if he associates with Childe's reincarnated lives.
He can't.
