The vision of fireworks lighting up the Abu Dhabi night sky and golden champagne spray broke the dam of relief as the culmination of the worst year of his life came to a close. There was still a month left of the year and the FIA Gala to be dragged to but at least he wouldn't be attending as a runner up again.
Not that he would be attending another gala after this anyway.

It started in shared hotel rooms between races and behind the backs of chaperones when they were high on wins and non alcoholic podium champagne. Bruising kisses and inexperienced hands ripping off damp nomex to be lost behind hotel cushions in their rush to touch the other. As they progressed through categories and were no longer sharing rooms or could trust that the people staying beside them would keep their mouths shut they had to change tactics.
