“Alpha,” Max chokes out as his world tilts, hands clasped in front of him, head bowed, eyes filling with tears. It’s almost blurry enough that he can’t see the dusting of white that covers the kitchen floor. Not that it matters. His heart is galloping so fast his chest hurts, throat closing up in panic.

The fan in the bathroom whirs to life as he flicks the fluorescent lights on. He blinks rapidly as his eyes slowly adjust. He frowns down at the products littering the counter by the sink, none of which are his. He lifts his eyes to the mirror…
The sound that rips from his throat isn’t entirely human, he’s sure of it. His mouth gapes open as he lifts his hand to his cheek, watches the reflection move with him. He steps closer, sees the horror obviously pooling in his eyes, the sheet white colour of his skin.
Staring back at him, is none other than Max Verstappen.

Now it's Max's turn to grin, wide and teasing and maybe a little too earnest.
"Well, somebody just told me that I’m going to be a world champion one day, and there's only one driver around here good enough to beat me, so I'd like to think he'll be there too."
It's silly, and hopeful, but Charles is beaming at him and it feels like a promise.
"Preferably in second place, of course."
