Summary
“This is why I’m marrying you, you know.” Livio joins him, crouching too with his arms resting over his knees, reaching out with one fingertip to tap the tomas delicately on their tiny beaks. “You’re so nice.”
“Well, if you’re not gonna be kind to a baby bird, I dunno what kind of person you even are.” Nico’s eyes are on him, fondly, as Livio lets the tomas investigate the presence of his hand. “That’s not somebody I’d want to be with.”
The birds chirp their approval, bestowing a barely-audible blessing upon them both.
“You’re nice to animals, nice to kids.” Livio looks at him with lowered lashes, shyly trying not to smile too widely. “Nice to me. You’re just nice.”
There’s a long moment in which Nico says nothing. Livio’s well acquainted with the expressions he makes; this is one that makes his heart ache.

He loves Livio too much and knows the Eye of Michael will tear his little brother apart, soon, if he doesn’t make himself into something hideous and broken. Wolfwood won’t let him; Livio deserves better, so much better, and so Wolfwood will do it again and again. He’ll become the monster so his brother doesn’t need to be, whatever it takes, rivers of blood and gore between his teeth and another hundred needles pressed into his skin.

If Wolfwood doesn’t want Livio to be turned into a monster, then there’s only one other thing that his brother can be that will protect him from this place. Mine.
