“Aaron… I’m working on Christmas day. At the farm, I told Moira this morning that I’d cover it so she could have some family time.” Robert’s eyes are tracking his face as Aaron takes this in.
“But, why would you do that? We’ve got plans?”
“Well, no, you’ve got plans.” Robert insists, brow furrowing, and Aaron's confusion must show on his face because he continues, “Your mum, Mandy, Mackenzie, I wasn’t invited to any of that, you were.”
Aaron thinks back over the day, and okay, maybe none of them had explicitly said that Robert was invited, but “Well, it was implied!”

Summary
When Robert was with Chrissie, before carbon monoxide poisoning, and bullet holes, and prison, holiday parties like this one were his bread and butter. He could laugh and charm and schmooze with the best of them, making sales and building relationships left, right and center.
With Chrissie, he would put on a suit and tie, or a tuxedo if the occasion called for it, and she would wear a dress and they would be the envy of everyone in attendance. All eyes would be on them, on him, and he would relish in it. The spotlight loved Robert Sugden, and he loved it right back.
Tonight, however, Robert feels like he wants to throw up.

Summary
When Robert’s twenty he spends Christmas with a girl called Erica and her family. They’ve been seeing each other for a couple months at this point, which mostly means shagging at house parties and falling asleep on the sofa watching old episodes of M*A*S*H, but he likes her well enough. She wears cheap vanilla body spray and tastes like fake strawberry lip balm and spearmint gum, and when she finds out he isn’t going back to Yorkshire she invites him over, says it isn’t anything fancy but her cousins bring their boyfriends so no one will mind.
(It’s the first time she’s called him her boyfriend.
Robert spent the Christmas before curled up on his shitty kitchen floor, drinking the bottle of wine he’d won in a pub raffle and staring at the landline on the wall, wishing and hoping and dreading for it to ring. It hadn’t, and he’d fallen asleep with the taste of salt and Burgundy on his tongue.
He says yes immediately.)
